On the 26th October, Relentless Freeze Festival went off again! Not only did we see our team rider Billy Morgan win the entire thing, we also witnessed some really nice riding from the likes of our boys Lewis Sonvico, Will Radular Scott, Nathan Onions, Scott Penman and Cody Heirons in the Battle of Britain. Its fair to say the FBBB team did pretty well!

Mad Props to Cody Hierons in the main competition as well, throwing some really nice backside 7′s and a few sweet 9′s earned himself a well deserved 15th place overall.

It was the champ Billy Morgan who stole the show though, being the first ever UK rider to win Relentless Freeze Festival in the whole 5 years its been running – it was a night to remember. Billy was on top form all night, landing his Double rodeo’s, Double cork 12′s and seemingly everything else. Billy took the win over world class international riders such as Marko Grilic, Marco Grigis, Tor Lundstrom, Victor De La Rue and many more! All we can say is well done Billy, the whole of the UK is so proud of what you achieved and we’re pretty sure this won’t be his last top podium finish!

We caught up with four of the Relentless Energy snowboard riders – Jenny Jones, Xavier De La Rue, Victor de la Rue, and Tyler Chorlton to have a quick chat about the festival and what they’ve been getting up to recently…

Photo’s Richard Clark

Jenny Jones:

We’ve been seeing lots of posts of you online surfing recently, is that something you’re really getting into and should we be expecting to see any medals any time soon?

( Laughs ) No! I’m definitely an amateur surfer and I love that! I’m like the equivalent of someone who goes on a snowboarding holiday for two weeks a year, that kind of person!

Favourite place to surf?

Down in Devon, I love that its not my job, I’m not doing a competition or anything and I don’t have to try and look good for a photo! I can just enjoy it.

Plans for next season?

I am hoping to compete in the World cups to get my qualifications to get in the Olympics, and see how it goes!

What’s your views on how women’s Snowboarding has come recently, seeing Aimee Fuller land the double backflip must of been something…

Yeahhhhh! I think its awesome, Aimee Fuller what a little legend! She Cracks me up so much. On a different level to me! That’s cool though I think, we’ve also got Katie Ormerod coming through, watched her shred in New Zealand and she is brilliant.

Do you think UK Snowboarders are now being taken more seriously around the world?

Yeah, I hope so! On the lads side of things you’ve got Jamie and Billy. Also there’s the young lad Jamie Trinder and Matt McCormick – so many young ones coming up! Definitely good on a European level, if not internationally.

Will we see another gold medal round your neck?

It honestly depends on my body, I’m just trying to keep it fit and healthy, and if I can do that I can hopefully stay at that level, we’ll see.

Will you be back on the jump next year?

Been there done that, and ill leave it there haha!

Do you like having the idea of having a snowsports festival in London?

Yes! I think its brilliant, you’ve got to have it, It’s a place where everyone comes together. Everyone gets a feel for Snowboarding or Skiing again whether your new to it, if there not new to it they get that buzz back, and makes you want to book a holiday. At the end of the day you need people to go on the holidays, book them up, just to keep the industry alive. So I’m all for it.

Thank you for spending time with us!

No worry’s!

Victor De La Rue:

Have you rode at Freeze before?

Its my 3rd time, haven’t jumped the kicker yet but its pretty sick to be all with Relentless riders and looking forward to the contest.

Do you like the idea of having the festival here?

Yeah its a sick comp, especially here next to this crazy building, and all these crazy people!

How are you feeling about the competition?

Yeah really good, I heard there is a stylish competition which I really think this is awesome, Its a way of expressing yourself. This is why I enjoy to come here and do this contest.

Have you been doing much filming this year?

Yes I’ve had 4 projects this year, One called timeline with my brother ( Xavier De La Rue)

Do you ever get competitive with your brother?

No, not at all. This year i had the opportunity to go with him to Alaska, had no experience and he is just the best! Our goal is to do the best stuff together that’s possible!

What are your feelings about the Relentless Energy team at the moment?

Yeah I’m super stoked on the team, with Tyler, Jenny and all the rest. Super good team and it brings a lot to the Relentless image and I think the Relentless image is really cool because of these riders.

Tyler Chorlton:

Is this your first time at freeze?

No, been here twice before.

Ever ridden the jump?

Yes a few years ago, but was of suffering of some back pain, comes with the territory of snowboarding!

Are you involved with the indoor domes at all in the UK?

To be honest I’m more of a backcountry rider so my search in winter is to find the best pow, Have been snowboarding a long time and that’s where I find my joy.

Where did you start snowboarding?

Started in Andorra, and that’s where I live now. I have my snowboard shop and its been my base for the last twelve years or so.

Best snow you ever experienced?

Japan, I went there on a team trip last year, Wasn’t very impressed with the terrain and the features but the snow was something else. There is something about the way the moisture gets gathered on the sea between Japan and North Korea and it just dumps it all on Sapporo. The snow is the lightest stuff you’ve ever felt and at the same time you only need a couple of inches for it to feel bottomless.

Whats your view on the ‘Spin to win ‘ Mentality most of the kicker competitions are going for now-a-days?

I’m not a fan of it to be honest, I think there’s more to snowboarding then spinning faster and flipping more times. It takes away the aesthetic of the trick, there’s no air time feeling anymore even as a viewer you can’t see them have that floating hang time you see on back 5 or a big cork 3 and the viewers like “I want to have that feeling!” But with a double / triple cork you lose that, unless you have a massive massive jump which you only find in backcountry these days and you need the powder to land it!

Favourite trick off a cliff drop?

Has to be a front 3 indy, its that one you don’t have to struggle to land and its the good feeling with the blind landing, also back 1′s feel great.

Do you stay in Andorra for the whole season?

No, i move a lot, only spend about 3 months of the year in Andorra. Travelling a lot and filming.

How do you find the Relentless Snowboard team?

Yeah its great, have a good team going, even though we have two Frenchie’s on the team ( Laughs ) There representing and killing it! I think Relentless are doing really well, pushing the scene where it needs to go and look forward to seeing whats next!

Xavier De La Rue :

Xavier, you’re probably one of the best free riders in the world at the moment, did you ever think you could make a living just out of doing something you love?

Well, Its always been unreachable but that really attracted me to free riding, I remember, maybe 12 years ago a friend of mine who was competing with me was showing me all these videos of Alaska, and then I realised it was possible for that to become my job, but for sure I never though I would make it anywhere!

Favourite place to ride?

My favourite place to ride depends, Alaska is clearly a Mecca in free riding, but I like to explore new places. I’ve been with Relentless a few years ago to Antarctica and I’m going there soon again which is something that really appeals to me a lot, haven’t been as excited for a trip in many many years!

Where would you say the best snow you’ve ridden is?

I would have to say Alaska, it’s always really close to the sea, along with Canada and British Columbia, my favourite for sure.

What would your favourite trick to see thrown on kickers such as the Freeze Festival one?

I’m from the old generation and i really appreciate a nice backside air or something really stylish and clean.

Your new Film White noise is coming out, what was the scariest moment of filming it?

White noise is really cool because its different compared to last years film, there’s more insides to all my fears and my life in a way. So what happens in my head, it’s not just about big crazy tricks, finding the craziest thing and being happy with it. There’s a lot of fear in all that and I was happy to talk about it. Scariest stuff was my crashes in Alaska, I crashed, for once i didn’t get tricked by the mountain!

Have you had really bad avalanche experience ?

Yeah, I had a really really bad avalanche in Switzerland a 4 years ago, got taken down about a mile and a half, it was a miracle that I survived! I had one of those inflatable backpacks and that totally saved me.

Hows the team you have around you with Relentless?

Yeah well, when i started with relentless I wasn’t living in the UK so didn’t know the brand but I really like the philosophy of it. It was seeing us more for our passions, for a way of life and I really appreciated that. Since then I’ve felt really close to Relentless and I’m lucky to have a sponsor that really loves what I do!

Musto Productions should be no strangers to you by now as we have posted a lot about these guys in the past, for those of you that don’t know better get to know!

Here at FBBB we are seeing a lot of work from MPR from making music to directing and shooting peoples videos, So FBBB have a few questions we would like to ask that ourselves and im sure others would love to know the answers to!

First and foremost… what have MPR got in store for us this year?

” I think this year you will see MPR working with more exclusive artists, as well as some big names from the American side of things, you will see me managing a lot more artists to see if I can influence others and push them in new directions”

How do you guys all know each other?

“Well Tino, Stunnah and myself are all brothers, Hypez has been a good friend for years and he’s a real talented guy so we had to take him on board!”

So which artist are you currently working with Chris?

“MPR and myself have a long list of up and coming Artists that were working with; each with their own unique style, here’s just a few - Lsone, Killer Impact (from Dont Flop TV), Jaydakiss, Wu Tang Clang, Desperado from Og’s and im also flying out to New York to do a documentary on Hip-Hop in the UK and New York.”

What has pushed you to do what you are doing now?

“Well one day I just had a thought; I didn’t want to pay to go on Music promo sites like SBTV and others alike. So I thought why not make my own? I could already make graphics and logo’s to the standard set by other sites…so that’s what I decided to do! That way I could promote artists im managing for free as well as my own music. Win-win situation really, that way everyone is happy!”

How have MPR promoted their self this year?

“Well we started by doing the general circuits around London bars and clubs. Then we were lucky enough to play on a few of Westwoods nights in London. Following Westwoods nights we were invited to Radio stations all over the place and even Sugar Water Radio, Hot Phoenix Radio and Block Relevant Magazine in America.”

What Artists did you grow up listening to as a youngster?

“So many but a few great, well known global Artists would have to be people like Tupac, Elvis Presley and of course Bob Marley.”

Right Chris, unfortunately our time is up. We cannot thank you enough for your time. We hope to hear from you when you’re back from America and keep the work rate up and those tracks coming!
