Ben’s getting around a lot these days, he spent 2011 appearing at all of London’s hippest, hottest and loudest spots every single weekend. In-between, he’s been dropping podcasts on his site and giving a monthly dose of all things house on his radio show on Ideal Club World.
We catch up with Ben to hear how he finds the time!
How and when did you first get into music?
I first got really obsessed with it when I was about 9 or 10. My brother and I and a mate made tape recordings of an imaginary radio station called Radio 6 – very prescient! From there I started buying commercial dance music compilations and buying music magazines and immersing myself in it all.
When did you start to DJ?
When I was 14 on my brother’s decks. The first ones he had were two hi-fi turntables with a pitch control wheel – proper old skool! Then I got my own for my 15th birthday. I was so chuffed.
Who were you major influences?
Hip-hop, Eric Prydz, Pete Tong when I was getting into dance music in the first place, currently labels likes Diynamic and SUOL who make really musical house music.
How would you describe your style?
It depends where I’m playing, who for and what day. My bread and butter as it were is various shades of house/tech, but from time to time I play electro, dubstep/garage stuff, hip-hop, downtempo/disco…
What are you working on/looking forward to?
I’ve just put out my 2nd EP on Baker Street Recordings which I was really happy with, and I’ve just finished a really nice Toni Braxton re-edit that I’m just figuring out what to do with. Then I’ll have some releases on Australian label blotter coming up too which I’m really proud of.
