While compiling FBBB’s first compilation Carpetface used his shady negotiation techniques, a combination of kidnap and extortion and torture to get Jon Kennedy to give us two of his tracks, unfortunately this didn’t work but he agreed when we asked him really, really nicely. He’s been a busy lad over the past few years and we haven’t been able to lock him down to playing live at one of our jams yet, but there are many plans underfoot for 2012 at FBBB, watch this space!
Jon has played all over the world in bands and as a dj, he has released 4 LP’s on Tru Thought as well as a string of singles, anyway let’s hear more from him direct…
How and when did you first get into music?
At the age of 12 I started drumming and joined bands at 14 and by 16 and 17
was on the Manchester gig circuit. A lucky break got me signed to Tru
Thoughts in 2000, 4 LP’s later and my career is still gathering pace taking
me as far as Russia, China, USA, Lebanon and all over Europe on a regular
basis..
When did you start to DJ?
DJing was a result of a logistical and financial decision of whether to play
Live with a band or take a box of records. The latter proves easier and more
lucrative sometimes although I have toured the globe with my live band too.
Who were your major influences?
I always listened to soul, rock and hip hop from an early age as a result of
having parents with fukking good tatste in music.
How would you describe your style?
I make jazzy funk, hip hop and rock type compositions. Close to DH Shadow’s
original sound and Beck’s early gear.
What are you working on/looking forward to?
Im currently living in Prague working on my next Long Player for U.S. label
Organik Recordings and looking forward to a mad schedule of gigs taking me
to Kosov, Turkey, Greece, Hungary and various other splendid country;s.
