Hudge has been down with FBBB since the very start, he dj’d live on MK’s slope with Hip Hop band Shorty at one of our first events. Through the band and his appearances at Take It 2 The Bridge’s boat parties he met CH!CO and they have played at various venues together over the last few years.
Sadly the chances of catching him at a UK slope event are now slim, but one country’s loss is another’s gain, he is about to move to New Zealand any day now! He’ll be setting up parties, probably on boats and hopefully in the snow! Look out for him if you’re over there! FBBB wish him and his family good luck and he’ll be in touch regularly here with mixes and posts as soon as he’s settled! So, let’s here some more about the man…
How and when did you first get into music?
My folks always played me music. Rumour has it my mum played me Led Zep 4 through headphones on her belly when she was pregnant and my dad was a horn player so we always had music playing.
When did you start to DJ?
When I went to secondary school most of my mates there were DJs and I just tagged along. Funnily enough these guys turned out to be the Take It 2 The Bridge Crew that I still do boat parties with 22 years on. Back then we had sessions most weekends, they would spin tunes and occasionally let me have a go and you know what it’s like…when it bites, it bites. I got the turntable bug aged about 15 and I haven’t stopped since.
Who were your major influences?
Gang Starr and all Native Tongue originally. When I heard ‘Step In The Arena’ by Gang Starr that’s when I first started practicing scratching. Premo’s tight percussive style of cuts blew me away and that’s something I still aspire to today. His production ain’t bad either…
How would you describe your style?
I dunno you know…Essentially I see my self as a Hip Hop DJ but there’s so much good music out there. Most of the time I play straight up 90′s Hip Hop mixed with the odd original breaks but occasionally I get the chance (like on the boat parties) to mix up styles from Funk, Boogie, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, old Jungle, Reggae and Dub Step. Saying that I’ve just put out a mix called the Ghetto Discotheque that’s basically a Funk mix…
What are you working on/looking forward to?
I’ve been working on and hosting a night called the BOOM BAP for the last year and that’s been going real well. That’s starting up full time again on Feb 4th at the Lockside Lounge but without me. I’m handing the night over to Big Ted, Chris Read, Mr Thing and my homeboy Shredded Pete. I’m off. In Jan ’12 me and my family are moving out to New Zealand. I’m looking to get on festivals over there and Oz, maybe starting a night out there, some boat parties and doing more radio work.
Where can we find out more about you/hear you play?
